Tarvisio (Tarvis in German and Friulian, Trbiž in Slovenian) is a city of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

To know

Geographically it does not belong to the Italian region as it lies beyond the Alpine watershed. Another curiosity is that on Monte Forno there is the triple frontier, where the boundaries of Italy, Austria is Slovenia.

When to go

Despite being located at only 754 m a.s.l., it has a continental climate with cold winters (absolute minimum temperature -23 ° C in January 1985) and very snowy (due to high rainfall, an annual average of 250 cm of snowfall). On the other hand, summers are quite hot (absolute maximum 37 ° C in July 1983)

Background

Of Roman origin, it seems that the city rises in a place previously inhabited by a Celtic population, i Taurisci, from which the name Tarvisio derives. Possession of the Chapter of Bamberg since the 11th century, starting from the 12th century it assumed considerable commercial importance and in 1456 obtained from the bishop of Bamberg the privilege of holding an annual fair which still takes place there today. From the fifteenth century the iron industry flourished there; in the same period (1478 and 1492) it suffered looting by the Turks. It was involved in the events of the War of Please (1615-18).

For a long time the border with the Venetian territories of Carnia was a Pontebba, the center that precedes Tarvisio going up the Fella river and marks the boundary between the Val Canale and the Canal del FerroThe center, returned permanently to theAustria, was the scene of battles in the Napoleonic era together with the nearby one Malborghetto-Valbruna between the Austrian and French troops (1797, 1809, 1813).

It became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1919, after the First World War and since then it has experienced a significant boost as a border place, being on the directrix Venice-Vienna and near the important passes of Coccau, Fusine and Predil. Since the 1920s the municipality of Tarvisio has received significant migratory flows, from Friuli and from the rest of Italy, which have radically changed its ethnic composition.

Spoken languages

Similarly to the neighbors Malborghetto-Valbruna is Pontebba, Tarvisio is also a four-language town in which, in addition to Italian, Slovenian, German and Friulian are also spoken.

From a historical point of view, Slovenian-Carinthian is the oldest language of Val Canale, spoken at least since the seventh century. German, of the Bavarian-Carinthian type, spread from the late Middle Ages, favored by the dominion of the bishops of Bamberg first and then of the Habsburgs. Italian and Friulian are instead the result of recent immigrations following the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy after the Great War and for this reason it does not belong to a precise dialect, but reflects the characters of different varieties.

The distribution of these linguistic groups (as in the whole Val Canale, after all) is not homogeneous, so that different languages can coexist in the hamlets; on the contrary, the inhabitants are usually able to understand or even speak several languages. In Tarvisio, the capital, the majority of the population is native speakers of Italian or Friulian, but there is also a not negligible percentage of German speakers. In Fusine, German prevails, while Camporosso and Cave del Predil appear to be mostly Slovenian, and the three languages are protected under regional and national laws.

The population today is of an Italian majority, but the Slovenian and German minorities are always present.

Mount Lussari and Sanctuary
  • 1 Sanctuary of Mount Lussari (in Camporosso). It is located on the Mount Lussari in the territory of the Camporosso hamlet. The first chapel, of which no trace remains, was built in 1360 in the place where, according to tradition, a statuette of the Madonna and Child was found.
The current church dates back to 1500 and 1600. Over the centuries it has suffered some damage: in 1807 it was struck by lightning and in 1915 it was bombed, but it was always rebuilt. In the year 2000, on the occasion of the Jubilee, the church was completely restructured and renovated.
The church is also called "of the three peoples", as it is a place of pilgrimage for people of all three neighboring nationalities: Austrians, Italians and Slovenes.

Sites of naturalistic interest

Upper Fusine Lake
  • 2 Fusine lakes. Of glacial origin, they are two bodies of water: the Lake Superior and the Lower Lake, among the most beautiful examples of an alpine lake located in a limestone amphitheater. The valley that hosts them runs parallel to the Italian-Slovenian border and has been a protected area since 1971, with the name of Natural Park of the Fusine Lakes.
Lake Superior is located at 929 m a.s.l., has a maximum depth of 10 m and an area of 9 ha; the lower lake is located at 924 m a.s.l., has a maximum depth of 25 m and an area of 13.5 ha. In the vicinity of the lower lake there are also two other tiny bodies of water, called small lakes. The Upper Lake feeds the Lower Lake underground and the latter feeds the emissary of both lakes.
In winter, the Fusine lakes area is one of the coldest places in the whole region Friuli Venezia Giulia and often the minimum temperatures of Italy are recorded here together with the Cansiglio. The initial part of the lower lake appears to be very cold and also Alpe Tamer located under the Mangart, which according to unofficial surveys on 6 January 1985 reached -34 ° C.
The main factors that generate these temperatures are the karst subsoil and poor winter lighting; in winter the lakes are frozen from early December to March in normal years. Fusine Lakes on Wikipedia Laghi di Fusine (Q3547673) on Wikidata
Predil Lake
  • 3 Predil Lake. The lake rises at 959 m a.s.l., is 1.5 km long, 500 m wide and about 30 m deep, and is the second largest natural lake in the Friuli-Venice Giulia after that of Cavazzo. Its basin, which opens approximately in the middle of the Rio del Lago valley, is dominated to the south by Cima del Lago (Jerebica) (2,125 m), and to the north-east by the Cinque Punte (1,909 m).
It is probably of glacial origin, due to a morainic barrier or frequent landslides along the emissary. It tends to fill up quickly due to the gravels that the Rio di Saletto brings, which descends from Sella Nevea.
Thanks to the beauty of its waters and the surroundings it is a point of great tourist-naturalist interest. Lago del Predil on Wikipedia lago del Predil (Q3825861) on Wikidata
  • 4 Passo del Predil. Until 1918 it was completely in AustriaHungary, then from 1918 to 1947 it became the border between the province of Udine and the province of Gorizia. After the passage of a large part of the province of Gorizia to Yugoslavia, it became a border crossing for the first time, since 1991 with the Slovenia.
The pass was already known to the Romans from the 3rd century BC. It is one of the passages hypothesized as the entry point of the Lombards into Italy during the great invasion conducted by Alboin in the spring of 568.
It was the scene of battles in the Napoleonic campaigns of 1796, 1805 and 1809 and during the First World War. Passo del Predil on Wikipedia Passo del Predil (Q1754407) on Wikidata
