Geographical notes

Ancient boundary stone bearing the inscription "Empire of Austria - Duchy of Carinthia - 9 3/10 myriameters from Klagenfurt"

The town is crossed by the Pontebbana stream, which until 1919 marked the Italian-Austrian border, dividing the town into two municipalities: Pontebba in Italy and Pontafel in AustriaHungary. This ancient border, dating back to the Venetian era, has for centuries constituted a barrier not only political, but also cultural between the Val Canale (Slovenian and German speaking) and the other Friuli valleys. The Pontebbana stream flows into the Fella river which runs alongside the town coming down from the Val Canale.

Important center ofFriulian Alpine Arch, in Tarvisian, Pontebba is 24 km from Tarvisio, 39 from Tolmezzo, 41 from Gemona del Friuli, 53 from Villach (Austria), 75 from Udine.

Background

For a long time the Val Canale fell under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Bamberg (Bavaria). The Canal del Ferro it gravitated instead to the Italian area, with the patriarchal fiefdoms of the Abbey of Moggio Udinese before and with the Carnia of Venetian administration then. For the four centuries of the rule of the Serenissima, the border with the Austrian territories passed through Pontebba.

There was then a Pontebba Veneta and an imperial Pontebba (Pontafel), separated by the Pontebbana stream. Pontafel took the name of Pontebba Nuova in 1918 with the annexation to Italy and was united with Pontebba on August 15, 1924. On September 20, 1926 the former municipality of La Glesie San Leopoldo was also merged with Pontebba.

In 1976 the town was devastated by the Friuli earthquake, which caused enormous collapses and damage.
