background

The Ostseebad Prerow is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. The place is in Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park, the Darßwald surrounding the Prerow, the various coastal forms and the varied lagoon landscape offers nature lovers the opportunity to discover a wide range of flora and fauna. The Natureum, a branch of the German Maritime Museum at the Darßer Ort lighthouse, also enriches the experience of nature in and around Prerow.

Active vacationers can enjoy the varied leisure time opportunities in nature and on the beach and the water sports options on the Baltic Sea as well as on the Prerower Strom and the Bodden, especially since beach walks and bike tours are almost part of the standard program of a vacation in Prerow. But fans of the extended beach life will also get their money's worth on the lively north beach and on the quaint, natural west beach.

The fishing village of Prerow can look back on almost 1000 years of history from its origins in the medieval Hertesburg to today's seaside resort. Prerow has been a shipping center since the 17th century, so there were three sailing shipyards in the town in the following two centuries. After the decline of sailing, Prerow became a bathing and health resort, which also attracted numerous artists, including the expressionist style.

The tradition of the bathing resort has been preserved beyond 40 years of GDR history. Then as now, the fine sandy beach of Prerows is populated by thousands of holidaymakers during the high season. Although very well developed for tourism, Prerow has partially retained its originality in the town center and still offers a certain tranquility, at least in the off-season.

The route known as the Darßbahn led from Velgast via Barth to the Darß to Prerow until World War II. A resumption of the connection Barth - Prerow, which was partially dismantled after World War II, has not yet been decided. To do this, the bridge over the Meinigenstrom would have to be reopened for rail traffic and a solution found for the former embankment, which is now used by the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. The tracks up to the Meinigenbrücke are still there, so that this section would be relatively easy to reactivate from Barth.

On foot Everything can be easily reached within Prerow, even if the place from the Boddenhafen to the Darßwald is quite extensive.

After contact with a fire jellyfish, the affected areas should be treated with vinegar or shaving foam. Carefully scrape off any threads and tentacles, for example with a plastic card or with sand or salt water. Under no circumstances wash off with fresh water or alcohol. Then apply burn ointment or anti-allergic ointment and see a doctor if you feel unwell or have allergic reactions.
  • When collecting Amber there is danger, since amber with the dangerous doppelganger phosphorus can be confused, which comes from sunk ammunition. If the damp phosphorus dries, it will self-ignite, so you shouldn't transport your finds in your trouser or jacket pocket, but in metal containers. It is better to dry the find on a fireproof surface. If the clothing catches fire, take it off immediately, phosphor residues on the skin must be removed quickly. The fire cannot be extinguished with water; it can best be smothered with damp sand.
