Rayong(Thai: ระยอง) is the capital of the eponymous province in Eastern Thailand.

background

Rayong played an important historical role in 1767/68. After the fall of the kingdom Ayutthaya The general Taksin initially withdrew here with his soldiers. Even then, there was a large Chinese trading community in Rayong, and Taksin was of Chinese descent as well. Since all government structures had collapsed and the previous king was dead or disappeared, he had himself proclaimed ruler. He later succeeded in reuniting all of Siam and is now one of the most revered kings in Thai history.

In the 1980s, the east coast of Thailand, and especially the area around Rayong, was designated in an economic development plan as an area for the oil processing, chemical and heavy industry. Since then, numerous international corporations - including those from German-speaking countries, e. B. BASF and BMW - their factories built. As a result, Rayong Province has by far the highest per capita economic output in all of Thailand, it is on a level with the average values of some industrialized nations. The local population, however, has little of the wealth they generate; they tend to suffer from air and water pollution that are the result of inadequate safety and environmental protection measures.
