By plane

Nok Air and Air Asia offer combined flight-bus connections from Bangkok-Don Mueang via the airports which are around 120 km away Nakhon Phanom (Nok Air) or Sakon Nakhon (Air Asia) to Mukdahan. The combined flight and travel time with Nok Air is around 3 hours 40 minutes. The connection usually costs around 2,800 baht, while savings offers can start at just over 1,200 baht. The Air Asia connection takes around 4 hours and costs from 1,165 baht upwards.

By bus

A bus ride from Bangkok, 750 kilometers away (Mo Chit bus station) takes about 10 hours and costs the state bus company (บ ข ส.; “The Transport Co. Ltd.”) between 533 baht (car class ม. 4 ข) and 829 (car class ม. 4 ก, more modern buses). There are other direct connections from / to the Isan provinces Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani and Maha Sarakham. During the day, buses run every hour to the one on the other side of the Mekong Savannakhet in Laos (45 baht). Once a day there is also a cross connection from / to Phitsanulok, Sukhothai and Mae Sot.

  • Mukdahan Tower (or Ho Kaeo Mukdahanหอ แก้ว มุกดาหาร). The 65 meter high Mukdahan Tower was inaugurated in 1996 and has since served as a somewhat unusual landmark and of course as a lookout point. Inside, below the viewing platform, there is an exhibition on the history and ethnic groups of the province. From the platform itself (which can be reached with an elevator) one has a wide view over the city, the surroundings and also the Laotian side on the other bank of the Mekong. The dome at the top of the tower houses a silver Buddha statue.Price: Admission: 20 Baht for adults, 10 Baht for children (as of 2012).

  • Mukdahan is particularly known for the one located directly on the Mekong Indochina market (Talat Indochin, ตลาด อิน โด จีน). Mostly cheap products from neighboring Laos or Vietnam and China, which are also not far away, but also local silk and cotton goods are offered here. At many stands you have to do something.
