Nakhon Phanom is about 740 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. A bus ride takes about 11 hours.

Nakhon Phanom Airport (KOP), which is located approx. 15 km west of the city, is served daily by Air Asia and Nok Air. The flight time is about 1 hour 15 minutes. The standard price is around 2,500 baht each way, but temporary savings prices are often offered that can start at 780 baht.

- Phra That Phanom, in the district of the same name (Amphoe). That Phanom is the main landmark of Nakhon Phanom Province. The building history of the 57 meter high That (Laotian equivalent of a Thai Chedi, or more generally in Buddhist architecture Stupa) goes to about the year 900 AD. back. According to legend, it is even older and is said to have been built shortly after the Buddha's death. According to tradition, a clavicle of the Buddha is supposed to be kept in the sanctuary as a relic. It has been renovated several times since then (using a lot of gold) and is still one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in northeast Thailand. - About halfway between Nakhon Phanom (approx. 55 km) and Mukdahan (approx. 50 km) on the national road 212. - Wikipedia article.

- Folk festival on Phra That Phanom. In February or early March (exact date varies): an image of the monk Upagupta, who lived in the 3rd century BC. Buddhism is said to have brought to Southeast Asia, is carried from the Mekong to the Phra That Phanom. Worship rites are held, traditional dances are performed and there is a fair with local products, games, etc.
