Only 135,000 people live within the city limits, but there are almost a million in the larger metropolitan area. Because of this, as well as the large number of students and tourists, it definitely has a big-city flair. The traditional Chiang Mai can also be seen in the old town, which is surrounded by a moat. The seemingly endless number of small and large Buddhist temples (wats) is striking. The city, nicknamed the “Rose of the North”, is the starting point for most visitors to explore the region.
