background

The landscape of the elongated province of Phetchabun is characterized by the mountain range of the same name, which is up to 1794 meters high and represents the geographical border between north and north-east Thailand. As a result, parts of the province are difficult to access and sparsely populated.

The ruins of Si Thep in the south of the province, a Hindu-Buddhist city that existed from the 5th to 11th centuries, puzzles researchers to this day: Why is an apparently so important city so remote from the remains of other settlements from it Time? Which political unit did she belong to? Which people did its inhabitants belong to? How do the testimonies of Hindu and Buddhist art fit together?

Lom Sak in the north of the province is also a very historic city. This is where the “Müang Council”, whose Tai governor named Pha Müang, together with his ally Sri Indratitya from Bang Yang, shook off the supremacy of the Khmer in the middle of the 13th century, possibly lay Kingdom of Sukhothai and thus laid the foundation stone for the Siamese and later the Thai state.

During the Second World War, the autocratic head of government Phibunsongkhram planned to create a new capital here. The reason he gave was that a seat of government in the mountains would be more difficult to take from outside enemies than Bangkok, which is near the coast. The megalomaniac project was never implemented in view of the shortage caused by the war, but the preparations alone cost the lives of 4,000 forced laborers.

The area of today's Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, between the provinces of Phetchabun, Loei and Phitsanulok, was one of the most important retreats for the communist rebels in the 1960s and 70s. After their surrender, the national park was established in 1984.
