, 17 km south of the provincial capital Samut Songkhram and 40 km northeast of Phetchaburi. In the Conservation Center you can find out more about the biodiversity of the mangrove and the work of the forest conservationists. From here boat tours through the mangroves to the sea are offered, where you can have a snack (fish / seafood) on a floating island (bamboo raft with a hut). On the way back you can either wade through the knee-deep mud (bring insensitive clothing and a change of clothes! You can then take a shower on site) or let yourself be pushed on a raft. On the way you can see the local monkeys. You can also help plant new mangrove trees yourself, the necessary material is kept ready. Full day program: 600 baht. Be sure to think about sun protection. Some activities are offered depending on the water level, so it is best to contact the Conservation Center beforehand. There is also simple accommodation on site with wooden or bamboo huts, but they have a real bed, bathroom, AC and TV.
Directions: from direction Bangkok / Samut Songkhram Drive on the national road 35 towards Ratchaburi / Phetchaburi, at kilometer 72 (behind the PTT gas station) turn left towards Cha-am (Khlong Khon is only signposted in Thai: คลอง โคน), after 600 m behind the curve again left under the decorative gate (here "Wat Khlongkhon" is also signposted in Latin script, but the sign is very small and easy to overlook, otherwise only Thai signs, the gate is not overlooked), then it is another 4.5 km to the "Conservation Mangrove Center", which is across a small bridge on the other side of the canal). From direction Phetchaburi / Cha-am on road No. 3176 to Ban Laem, in Ban Laem turn left onto road No. 4012 towards Ban Bang Taboon, over the bridge at the mouth of the Bang Tabun River, follow the road for another 13 km, in the village of Yi San Turn sharp right behind the pink temple, pass under the decorative gate, then continue as described by Bangkok / Samut Songkhram.

activities

  • An evening cruise on the Mae Klong River in Amphawa. Myriads of fireflies in the trees on either side of the river are a spectacular sight. However, due to mass tourism and the destruction of the lampu trees preferred by the fireflies, the number of insects has already fallen sharply, and they are in danger of disappearing altogether.
