activities
- Naga fireballs (บั้งไฟ พญานาค, Bang Fai Phaya Nak). In October to the festival Ok Phansa (Full moon in October) inexplicably small, glowing fireballs rise from the waters of the Mekong. Local folklore associates this with the presence of nagas (mythical water snakes). None of the rational explanations discussed has so far been scientifically proven. Thousands of locals and guests gather on the banks of the river on these nights to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon. It should be visible along an approximately 250-kilometer section of the Mekong, with Phon Phisai (55 km east of the provincial capital) as the center.
