Samut Sakhon, also called Maha Chai, is located immediately southwest of Bangkok, at the mouth of the Tha Chin River in the Gulf of Thailand. Samut Sakhon is primarily a port city. Your old name Tha Chin means "Chinese port" and indicates that many junks from China used to land here.

By plane

The closest airports are the two Bangkok airports Suvarnabhumi (BKK; international flights) and Don Mueang (DMK; domestic and cheap flights). Don Mueang is 65 km and Suvarnabhumi 70 km from Samut Sakhon. A taxi from Suvarnabhumi to Samut Sakhon should cost around 600 baht plus 50 baht airport surcharge, and from Don Mueang a little less than 600 baht.

Samut Sakhon is on the Mae Klong Railway Line, a suburban railway that Bangkok Thonburi With Samut Songkhram connects. In Samut Sakhon, the railway line is interrupted by the Tha Chin River, which has to be crossed by ferry. The train station in downtown Samut Sakhon is called Maha Chai. The drive from Bangkok (train station at Wongwian Yai in the west of the city) takes about an hour; It is also an hour from Samut Songkhram (Mae Klong Station) to Ban Laem Station across the river.

By bus

The bus line 120 runs from Bangkok-Khlong San (Skytrain stations Krung Thonburi or Wongwian Yai) to Samut Sakhon (Maha Chai Mueang Mai market, a good 7 km outside the city center).

Minivans from the Victory Monument (Anusawari Chai) in Bangkok towards Samut Songkhram and Amphawa (and back) always pass Samut Sakhon. You can be dropped off there. It is possible, however, that passengers who want to travel the entire route will be given preference or one will only be "thrown out" at an intersection on the main road on the outskirts of the city.

Samut Sakhon is located on National Road 35 (Rama II Road), which continues from Bangkok to the southwest towards Samut Songkhram and Phetchaburi leads. A taxi from the center of Bangkok costs around 500 baht.

  • San Lak Müang Samut Sakhon (ศาลหลักเมือง สมุทรสาคร). Shrine with the city column, the symbolic center of the province and seat of the city's guardian spirits. Since the population of the city is predominantly of Chinese origin, the shrine also has a Chinese appearance with Chinese characters, dragon figures, red lanterns, etc. It is surrounded by a public green area and is located directly at the large ferry pier.
  • Pom Wichian Chodok (ป้อม วิเชียร โช ฎ ก, Wichian Chodok Fortress), Th. Rawiwong, Maha Chai (downtown). Remains of a coastal fortress built in 1828 to repel a possible Vietnamese invasion. Among other things, there are old cannons to see.Open: daily 8 am–5pm.
  • Wat Yai Chom Prasat (วัด ใหญ่ จอม ปราสาท). Buddhist temple complex from the 16th century, approx. 4 km west of the city center of Samut Sakhon, behind the bridge over the Tha Chin.
  • Wat Suthiwat Wararam (วัด สุทธิ วา ต ว รา ราม), in Tambon Tha Chalom (west of the Tha Chin River). Also Wat Chong Lom called, Buddhist temple from the 19th century; it was used as a model for many newly built temples in the time of Ramas V. There is a statue of Ramas V (Chulalongkorn) in front of the temple.
  • 1  Phanthai Norasing Historical Park (อุทยาน ประวัติศาสตร์ พัน ท้าย นรสิงห์), Tambon Phanthai Norasing (just under 20 km east of Samut Sakhon). Phanthai Norasing Historical Park (Q42882014) in the Wikidata database.Phanthai Norasing served as the helmsman on the barque of King Sanphet VIII of Ayutthaya (r. 1703-09), nicknamed "Tiger King", who was known for his cruelty. During a boat trip on the winding Khok Kham Canal, despite careful steering, he was unable to avoid an overhanging tree that the boat collided with. According to the old palace law, this crime was punishable by death. The king, who really valued the helmsman and trusted him, wanted to pardon him, but Norasing insisted on his punishment. The king then donated a shrine to commemorate the consistency and self-sacrifice of his servant. He also had the dead straight Maha Chai Canal dug in order to avoid such accidents in the future. The history park consists of this shrine, a temple and a mangrove forest, through which a nature path leads, a 300 year old, long wooden barge and a life-size statue of the phantom Norasing. This is revered by some locals like a guardian spirit.   • Ao Mahachai Mangrove Forest Natural Education Center, Tambon Bang Ya Praek (5.5 km south of the Ban Laem ferry). Section on the west side of the mouth of the Tha Chin River into the sea, where the mangrove forests that were once spread around the Gulf of Thailand are still preserved.
  • Seawater salt flats. Along the coast of Samut Sakhon there are numerous large basins in which sea water evaporates to extract sea salt. This can also be bought on site.

  • Porto Chino. Shopping center right on the main road to Bangkok (Rama-II.-Straße). There is also a food court and various restaurants.
