The Metropolitan Region of Santiago is lying in central partChile and includes the metropolitan area of the capital Santiago as well as the Andean areas directly east of the city. With around 7 million inhabitants, it is the region with the largest numerical population in the country.

A distinction can be made between the densely built-up conurbation in the west and the very sparsely populated Andean regions in the east (less than 0.1 inhabitants per km²). Furthermore, in the west of the region, on the eastern slope of the coastal cordillera, there are some slightly less populated areas with agriculture.

Numerous smaller places in the Andean region are popular local recreation areas. Due to the proximity to Santiago, however, you will always meet a lot of big city refugees on weekends.
