When to go
Surely the most suitable period is the summer when you can breathe a beautiful atmosphere of joy and emotions for the holidays in which everyone can participate, young and old.
Background
There are two hypotheses on the origins of its name, the first has it that it derives from Rocca Bonnarii, referring to its founder, a certain Bonnario; the second that it comes from Rocca di Vivara, referring to the district of Vivara still existing and bordering the municipality of Roccavivara.
The lower part of the Roccavivara countryside offers ample evidence of the presence of inhabited centers at the time of republican and imperial Rome. Historical information tells us that in 1268 Gualtiero di Vollers was feudal lord of Roccavivara; he was followed by Bertrando Cantelmo, whose descendants held the dominion until 1442. Subsequently the power passed to the Sangro, the Carafa and the Coppola until the abolition of feudalism.
A very interesting site was found in San Fabiano: a Roman villa certainly built on a ground floor supported by a megalithic construction.

What see
- 1 Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Canneto. Of remarkable historical and artistic value is the church of Santa Maria in Canneto, built in the homonymous district, so named for its proximity to the Trigno river, an area therefore rich in reeds. It was built on an already existing place of worship, and although the date of its construction is not clear, the first news of the building dates back to around 706, as evidenced by a document in which Duke Gisulfo I of Benevento makes a gift of the church. to the Benedictine monks of San Vincenzo al Volturno. In the tower façade and in the bell tower of the church there are re-used fragments attributable to the 8th and 9th centuries, certainly belonging to the first building, of which no structure remains. The interior of the church has three naves with a trussed roof and Roman columns, coming from some nearby construction, surmounted by Romanesque capitals. It offers a substantial number of sculptures that adorn the portal lunette and the capitals.
- The church that has reached our days dates back to the 11th-12th centuries, has a Latin cross plan, with three apses. The facade has no relevant decorative elements, except for a bas-relief on the portal lunette. In the external walls of the church there are tombstones and various inscriptions from Roman and medieval times, while on the right stands a mighty bell tower, completed in 1329 by the Abbot Nicola, consisting of a Gothic-style crenellated tower with three-light windows on the arches.
- The interior of the church is austere and has three naves, each ending in a semicircular apse. Along the central nave there is a valuable ambo, finely decorated, built in 1223, partly with older reused materials. : The ambo is supported by three unequal arches and seven small aedicules open under the parapet: the central one was supposed to support an eagle which, with its outstretched wings, served as a lectern. The others are occupied by six monks in high relief, intent on the activities that represent the monastic rule of the ora et labora.
- Behind the main altar is the statue of the Madonna of Canneto, dating back to the fourteenth century, in Gothic style, and also known as the Virgin of Smiles.
- In the area adjacent to the church there are archaeological excavations that have brought to light the remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century AD.
Events and parties
- Feast of Sant 'Emidio (Saint Emiddie).
5th August. Celebrated festival of the town of Roccavivara. The celebration focuses on the patron saint of the town who, according to stories, saved Roccavivara and his people from a terrible earthquake during a procession dedicated to him. From this moment on, a festival will be celebrated purely dedicated to Sant'Emidio in the month of June (harvest period) venerating him with wagons decorated with ears of wheat that paraded through the town dragged by oxen or donkeys. Over the years it was decided to replace the public holiday with August 5th. Even today Sant'Emidio is celebrated by adults and children. It all starts in the morning with the Mass celebrated by the parish priest and the procession through the streets of the town. In the afternoon the celebration continues by parading floats decorated with ears of wheat and grains. The parade ends at Calvario (high part of the town) where you can taste the home cavatelli prepared by local women with the company of a glass of wine. The children and all the citizens continue to commit themselves to the holiday and make it as beautiful as possible with folk songs and dances, cheering the visitors with great warmth. To conclude, in the evening, a musical concert of various kinds of groups is organized to end the evening with a lot of energy.
