San Martino della Battaglia is a fraction of Desenzano del Garda, in Lombardy.
To know
Historic location where the famous one took place on 24 June 1859 battle, during which Napoleon III defeated the Austrians commanded by Francesco Giuseppe. It acquired its current name after the historic battle of San Martino in the second war of independence was fought there (June 24, 1859), in which the forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia, led by Vittorio Emanuele II, allied to the French of Napoleon III, defeated the Austrians, led by Emperor Franz Joseph.

It was built in 1880 on the highest hill where the bloodiest phase of the famous battle of San Martino was fought on June 24, 1859, in memory of those who fought for the unity of Italy. It was inaugurated on October 15, 1893, in the presence of King Umberto I. At the base there is a drum crowned by brick battlements, with a diameter of 23 meters. The cylinder of the tower rests on the drum, the top of which protrudes from a crown of cantilevered arches. Inside, a spiral ramp leads to the top of the tower, from which you can enjoy a remarkable view of the lower Lake Garda and the morainic hills, up to the Po valley. On the sides of the ramp, there are some rooms with bronze busts and frescoes by the painter Vittorio Emanuele Bressanin representing some episodes of the Risorgimento wars: Allegory of Italy and seven Italian cities, The Vignale Convention, The entry into Milan of Vittorio Emanuele II and Napoleon III after the victory of Magenta, Vittorio Emanuele at the Palestro bridge, Vittorio Emanuele in the Campidoglio, Defense of Venice.

- 3 Ossuary Church. The ossuary, housed in the noble chapel of the Treccani counts, collects 1274 skulls and bones of 2619 soldiers of the Sardinian Army and the VIII Austrian Army Corps who took part in the second war of independence and fought the bloody battle of Saint martin. The driveway to the chapel houses a series of memorial stones of the various departments that took part in the fighting.

- Lake Garda - It is one of the great Lombard lakes; the eastern shore is Venetian, the tip to the north it is thirty. A destination for climatic tourism since the nineteenth century, every coastal town lives and develops with tourism.
