Geographical notes

St. Moritz is located in Alta Engadine, on the left bank of the Inn, overlooking the lake of the same name. It is 49 km from Chiavenna, 57 km from Tirano, 77 km from Chur and 124 km from Lugano.

Background

The city was the seat of the II Winter Olympic Games (1928) and dei V Winter Olympic Games (1948), as well as ai Alpine World Ski Championships of 1934, 1974 and 2003. In 2017 it will host the sporting event again.

How to get

By plane

There is a small airport at Samedan (airport site), which is about 5 km / 20 minutes from Sankt Moritz. The airport has connections with the international airports of Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Milan is Munich.

By car

If you arrive by car from the Switzerland the only pass that is open even in winter is the Julius Pass. If you come from Davos or Klosters you can take the train with the possibility of loading cars that passes on the Flüela Pass.

FromItaly there are three options:

On the train

If you arrive at the international airport of Zurich take the train of SBB for Chur and from here the train Rhb (Rhaetian Railway) passing on the famous Albula Pass for Sankt Moritz. Trains from Chur to St. Moritz leave approximately every hour. The last train from St. Moritz to Chur leaves at 21.

FromItaly you can reach Sankt Moritz by train from Tirano (Lombardy) with the Bernina railway, declared byUNESCO world Heritage. The service is quite expensive, but the landscapes that can be admired are breathtaking.

Furthermore, St. Moritz is the starting point for the famous Glacier Express is Palm Express.

By bus

Sankt Moritz is served by the postal buses of the Post Bus. Buses depart from Chur is Lugano. Reservation may be required. The last postal bus from St. Moritz to Chur leaves at 10pm, after which time there are no bus or train connections to Chur. On this route you can admire numerous Swiss villages and spectacular mountain views.

How to get around

There is an excellent public transport system around the town. Cycling is also an excellent solution, although Sankt Moritz is a bit steep. In the winter period there are few public parking lots.

Events and parties

Numerous events are organized every year in the Engadine town, both in summer and in winter. The events are very varied such as the golf tournament on the snow, horse riding tournaments (also on the snow), gastronomic festivals, ski and snow board competitions, cricket matches. on ice and numerous concerts.

What to do

  • Skiing and snowboarding. There are four ski areas in and around Sankt Moritz: Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolezza is Zuoz. They offer around 350 km of slopes and 34 cozy restaurants. There are also numerous ski schools.
  • Ice skating in the summer. There is an ice skating rink open from mid-July to mid-April. In the structure you can obviously skate, but also play curling.

Excellent starting point for scenic hikes are the famous Corviglia mountains and Muottas Muragl.   • Mountain biking. A true paradise for cyclists exists among the highest peaks of the Eastern Alps. There are routes for a total of more than 400 km with different difficulties: everyone can find the one suitable for themselves.
