Sante Marie is a city of Marsica, subregion ofAbruzzo.

To know

The town, surrounded by the chain of the Carseolani mountains and located close to the Simbruini mountain range, is also called "Little Dolomites of Abruzzo". It is part of the national associations "City of the chestnut", "City of the truffle" and "Authentic villages of Italy". The capital is surrounded by several mountain villages, while the Grotte di Luppa regional nature reserve, a small special reserve that falls entirely within its municipal territory, has the task of protecting and enhancing the karst cavities of the Luppa Valley.

Geographical notes

Its municipal territory borders on the Abruzzo municipalities of Carsoli, Tagliacozzo is Magliano de 'Marsi and, on the north side, with the province of Rieti and the Lazio. It is almost completely surrounded by important reliefs of thecentral Apennines: Monte Bove (1340 meters above sea level), Monte Sant'Angelo (1100 m.) and Monte Faito (1485 m.). It is about 82 kilometers from Rome, over 60 km fromthe Eagle and about 23 from Avezzano.

When to go

Summer is the best time to visit Sante Marie and the ancient mountain villages that characterize its municipality. There are many itineraries that lead to some rediscovered paths rich in history, such as those of Corradino di Svevia, and to the karst caves or cliffs of which the territory is rich.

Background

Certain and more ancient testimonies date back to 1187 and 1188, respectively with the Catalog of the barons and the Bull of Pope Clement III in which the medieval name of the town appears "Alto (o Castro) Sanctae Mariae". From the 12th century the Orsini family was feudal lord of the territories of the entire Tagliacozzo and Sante Marie area until 1497 when the Orsini family took over from the Orsini family until 1806, the year of the feudal subversion. Italy, in Sante Marie, in the locality of Casale Mastroddi, the Catalan general José Borjés and his soldiers were captured by the national guard and by the men of the Piedmontese troops, committed to regaining the lost Kingdom of the Two Sicilies with the help of brigands. Borjés and his men were shot in Tagliacozzo. In 1888, one year after the official declaration of the drying up of Lake Fucino, the Rome-Avezzano railway line was inaugurated.Sulmona-Pescara which allowed to overcome an atavistic isolation of the internal areas. Sante Marie severely damaged by the earthquake of 13 January 1915 had to undergo severe bombing in 1944 by 12 American fighter-bombers which caused destruction and 28 victims.

Itineraries

1. Path of the Brigands, an itinerary consisting of several stages that touches municipalities of Abruzzo and Lazio for a total of about 100 kilometers. The route begins in Sante Marie and touches other localities in the Marsican territory extending up to Cicolano, rediscovering the nature, history and places of the brigands located on the border between the Papal State and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
2. Corradino's path, the path immersed in the green mountains of Sante Marie retraces the steps that the young Corradino of Swabia faced first to reach the Palentini plains, where he clashed with Charles I of Anjou losing the decisive battle of Tagliacozzo on 23 August 1268, and later those of his escape towards the Luppa valley and the plain of the Knight.
