Geographical notes

Sassuolo is one of the major industrial centers of the whole region, and is famous all over the world for the production of ceramic tiles. Worthy of note is the ceramic company "Marca Corona", the oldest in the city, founded in 1741.

The city, located about 16 km from Modena, it is half flat and half hilly. In the hilly area there are the so-called "calanchi", small clayey reliefs almost completely bare, and therefore with very little vegetation. In this area there are also a large number of fossils, especially fish or other marine animals, since Sassuolo was occupied by the sea millions of years ago.

When to go

Sassuolo is characterized by a warm and temperate climate; rainfall is very abundant and, if persistent, can create some disruption to circulation, especially in winter. The average annual temperature is about 13 ° C, rainfall 847 mm. The hottest month is July.

Background

The city is mentioned for the first time in a notarial deed of 980. However, the exact date of its foundation is not known. However, we know, thanks above all to the numerous archaeological finds found in the area, that the city was inhabited since prehistoric times.

In medieval times Sassuolo was first governed by Matilde di Canossa and later by the Della Rosa lords. In the humanistic-Renaissance period, however, it was dominated alternately by the Dukes of Este, who also had the famous Palazzo Ducale built, and by the Pio di Carpi.
