Soufflenheim is a french Commune in the department Bas-Rhin, in the Alsace.
background
Politically, the municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Haguenau and the Canton of Bischwiller.
The community is about 15 kilometers east of Haguenau and is next to Betschdorf, which is located 12 km north of Haguenau, one of the two places in Elass where traditional ceramics are still produced today. While the "bowl turner" are mainly here, the "Krugmacher" (Hafner) can be found in Betschdorf.
Under the extensive forest area of the Hagenau Forest, meter-thick layers of clay can be found, so that potters settled here as early as the Bronze Age. Pottery was also made in the area in Roman times, but no Roman pottery settlement has yet been found in the community. In the 9th century, a church dedicated to Saint Michael by Irish monks was built on the Kirchberg. Today's Michaelskirche from 1825 is not a successor, but was built some time after the old church fell into disrepair. It is unclear whether the plain below the hill was already built on in the 9th century. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1147. In that year, Frederick I Barbarossa granted the local potters the right to exploit the clay pits within the imperial hunting ground.
