background

history

A small village was first mentioned in a document around 1300, but the place became deserted after the Turkish wars. Around 1670 there is a new collection of single houses (Streets by the three proud pines, later the Straßhof) was documented from it.

This Strasshof remained little more than a small collection of individual houses and individual courtyards until the middle of the 19th century. With the construction of the northern line in 1838 and the associated train station and boiler room in the vicinity of what is now the center of the village, a number of railway keeper's houses were built. The rapid settlement began in 1908 with the opening of the large marshalling yard, when today's settlement based on the example of the English garden city was laid out like a master plan for the workers and their families.

The further history of the place is strongly connected with the railway and gave the place the name suffix. The marshalling yard was one of the largest in Central Europe until after 1945 and also had a sad role in the handling of transports to Eastern Europe for troops and concentration camp prisoners. In the post-war period, the importance of Strasshof as a railway junction disappeared, and one of the largest railway museums in Central Europe was set up on the huge railway site.

In 2006, Strasshof achieved sad world fame as the place where the kidnapped Natascha Kampusch was held in a family home. After eight years of imprisonment, she managed to escape and her kidnapper committed suicide. The house was demolished in a row to keep sensational tourists away.
