history
Deutsch-Wagram was founded in the 11th century and the form of a rural village has been preserved to this day. The name Wagram means edge of the terrain ("Wogenrain") and refers to the hills north of the village, which demarcate the flat Marchfeld from the Weinviertel hill country. The addition "German" was added in the late 19th century and is intended to delimit the area as a German-speaking settlement in contrast to the numerous Slovak, Czech and Croatian-speaking settlements in the area in the past.
Deutsch-Wagram was the location of the Battle of Wagram (1809), when the Napoleonic troops, after their devastating defeat near Aspern, won a victory against the Austrian army and were able to turn the course of the war.
Deutsch-Wagram is now an important suburbanization area in the vicinity of Vienna, with many young families settling here.
Deutsch-Wagram became a market in 1929 and a town in 1984.
Districts
In addition to Deutsch Wagram (the settlement is written without a hyphen, in contrast to the municipality) there is also the Helmahof settlement.
