Hohenau an der March is a market town in the northeast Weinviertel, not far from the mouth of the Thaya and the March, which also forms the border triangle between Austria andCzech Republic-Slovakia represents.
background
Settled for the first time in the Neolithic, a church was first mentioned in Hohenau in the 12th century. An economically prosperous market arose on Bernsteinstrasse. With industrialization, the village became a center of sugar production; the sugar factory (closed in 2005) was one of the largest in Austria. While the majority of the population were Czechs around 1920, they were almost completely assimilated by the Second World War.
