Hohenau an der March is a market town in the northeast Weinviertel, not far from the mouth of the Thaya and the March, which also forms the border triangle between Austria andCzech Republic-Slovakia represents.

Settled for the first time in the Neolithic, a church was first mentioned in Hohenau in the 12th century. An economically prosperous market arose on Bernsteinstrasse. With industrialization, the village became a center of sugar production; the sugar factory (closed in 2005) was one of the largest in Austria. While the majority of the population were Czechs around 1920, they were almost completely assimilated by the Second World War.

  • In Břeclav you have a connection to express trains from / to Prague, Brno, Bratislava and Warsaw; in Vienna main station or Meidling connections to the express trains of the ÖBB.
  • The regional railway line from Mistelbach coming has no more passenger traffic.

Tourist Attractions

  • Parish Church of the Finding of St. Cross. In the middle of the former cemetery with a Romanesque choir (12th century).
  • Bell tower. Landmarks of the community: three-storey tower with a square floor plan; originally built at Hauptstrasse / Schulgasse in 1745; Moved to the current location in 1966/68. In figure niches there are statues of Saints Martin, Sebastian, Florian and Johannes.
  • Hohenau sugar factory. Large industrial building that still dominates the townscape (closed in 2006).
  • Princely Liechtenstein press houses at the foot of the Kellerberg
  • Jewish Cemetery. Closed in 1938.
