It is the language of the Qur'an, the Holy Book of Islam and is therefore considered the mother tongue of the Islamic world. This guide uses the modern standard arabic.
Arabic is the official language in the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya), in the Middle East in (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Syria and Egypt), in the Gulf States (Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates) and in Africa (Comoros, Djibouti, Sudan, and Somalia. All these countries are members of the Arab League. Furthermore, Arabic is also an official language in Chad (besides French) and in Israel (next to Hebrew). In addition, Arabic is a minority language in many countries.
