Teplice (former German name: Teplitz or Teplitz-Schönau) is a city and health resort in North Bohemia, at the foot of the Ore Mountains and des Central Bohemian Uplands.

background

There are warm medicinal springs in the vicinity of Teplice. The place name is derived from the Slavic root word for "warm" (cf. Czech teplý, "Warm"). The Benedictine monastery Teplice was first mentioned in the 12th century, the spas in the 16th century. Large parts of the city were destroyed in a great fire in 1793 and then rebuilt in the classical style, which earned the city the nickname "Little Paris". In the 19th century, the thermal springs were very popular and attracted numerous spa guests. In this context, the casinos also emerged.

Until the First World War, the city belonged to Austria, then to Czechoslovakia. The population, however, was predominantly German-speaking (1930: 23,100 Germans, 5,300 Czechs). Teplitz was the seat of various German-Bohemian and Sudeten German organizations. With the so-called Sudetenland, Teplitz-Schönau came to the German Reich in 1938. The city's synagogue, the largest synagogue in Bohemia, was burned down in March 1939. After the end of the war, Teplice was returned to Czechoslovakia, the German-speaking population largely expelled as a result of the Beneš decrees and replaced by Czechs and Slovaks from other parts of the country.
