Geographical notes

Valcuvia or Val di Cuvio is a basically mountainous area that extends from Mount Nudo to the Monte Campo dei Fiori. It is crossed by the Boesio river which flows into the lagoon area of Laveno-Mombello.

Valcuvia takes its name from the wording: "Vallis Cum Via" that is a valley crossed by a road.It is thought that since Roman times it was used as a link for trade thanks to its strategic position between Luino and Laveno Mombello. two of the main cities in the area.

In 1907 the SATV (Società Anonima Tramvie Valcuviane) was established which took care of the realization of the same. On June 14, 1914, the Tramvia della Valcuvia was inaugurated. It connected Cittiglio, crossed the Valcuvia up to Bosco Valtravaglia; thus allowing to connect the two valleys that were reachable only in some areas from the Varese-Luino railway line. After the Second World War, however, the tramway was closed due to the renovation of the facilities, to which the insertion of a bus line was preferred.
