background

language

In general, Italian is spoken, in the tourist centers, especially on Lake Garda, you can get by with German.

North of Verona on the Lessini Mountains and on the Asiago plateau there are still a few villages that speak an old Bavarian dialect called "cimbro", after the name of the first settlers who emigrated from Bavaria in 1200 AD settled in the 13 municipalities (more than just small villages) of Lessinia and in the 7 municipalities of the Asiago plateau. Even today there are 2 areas where some people understand and speak it (Giazza in the province of Verona and Roana in the province of Vicenza). The ancient idiom of German origin is said to come from Denmark, but Venetian immigration came from Bavaria with the permission of the Bishop of Verona Bartolomeo della Scala. From the ancient Cimbrian culture, the names of the localities (Sciopeter, Fortal, Drussel, Ongiar) have been preserved to remind of the German origin of the ancient inhabitants of the Lessini.

Wine

This province is home to some of the most famous wine-growing areas in Veneto: Valpolicella (with the red wines Amarone della Valpolicella, Valpolicella Ripasso and Recioto della Valpolicella), Bardolino (also red wine), Lugana (white wine and sparkling wine), Soave and Custoza (white wine).

rice

The flat land of Bassa Verones south of Verona is used for agriculture. Rice has been grown in the marshland since the 15th century. The local variety is Vialone Nano Veronese, which is particularly suitable for melty risotto dishes. One of the most popular dishes in the region is Risotto all’isolana, with veal, pork loin and some cinnamon.

The "Cittá di Riso" Isola della Scala lies in the middle of the rice fields. The rice producers Ferron, ranch, Melotti, del Vò, Riccò and the Cooperativa La Pila run all stores in or around the city. There you can buy the local quality rice. The Fiera del Riso takes place for several weeks, here the chefs distribute around 300,000 servings of risotto to the visitors every year.
