Volpriehausen is a district of Uslar at the Sollingrand in Lower Saxony.

background

Volpriehausen is a village on the edge of the Solling, about 7 km from Uslar and 25 km from Goettingen away. The first settlement finds in the region go back to the younger Stone Age, including a 3000 year old stone ax. After an eventful history under Cheruscan, Saxon and Franconian influence, Volpriehausen became a monastery village of the Marienstein monastery in today's Christianization Norten-Hardenberg, the village was subsequently administered by various noble families from the region.

The more recent history of the place was mainly shaped by potash mining. Rock salts were mined in the Wittekind mine for almost 40 years until 1938, when the German Wehrmacht took over the mine and set up an ammunition factory there. In the last year of the war, a branch of the youth concentration camp was established to maintain production despite the labor shortage Moringen erected in the factory. Due to the traditional storage of a large number of locked boxes with unknown contents towards the end of the Second World War, various sources still suspect that this was the one from the Germans Koenigsberg outsourced famous Amber Room could have been traded. What is certain is that the explosion of large amounts of leftover ammunition in September 1945 destroyed numerous cultural assets, books and scientific exhibits from the University of Göttingen, which had been brought there to protect against the consequences of the war.
