Wales (in English Walesand in English Welsh Cymru) is a Celtic historical land, the smallest of the four constituent parts Of the United Kingdom (commonly known as Great Britain). The capital and largest city of Wales is Cardiff.

Characteristic

Geography

Wales map.png

Wales is the southwestern part of the island of Great Britain (the other two parts of the island are: England and Scotland). Its area is upland-mountainous and not extensive - it measures only about 250 km from north to south and about 50 km from east to west. Swansea, Cardiff, Holyhead, Fishguard and Milford Haven. Many inland areas are covered with grass or moorland, and forests are rare. The population density is low and irregular (highest in the south-eastern region). The entire population of Wales is just 3 million.

Big cities are few in fact only Cardiff (320,000 inhabitants) and Swansea (230,000).

Wildlife is protected, inter alia, in national parks: Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire Coast and Brecon Beacons.

Climate

The climate of Wales is moderately warm, maritime with cool summers and mild winters. The average January temperature is 4 to 6 ° C, and July 13 to 16 ° C. You have to take into account abundant rainfall, especially in mountainous regions.

History

Policy

For a long time, active efforts have been made in Wales to preserve the national and cultural identity. The most important of these activities is the fight for your own national language. Welsh is the second official language and is spoken by around 25% of the population, mainly in the north and east of the country. Geographical names, e.g. names of places and streets, appear in two language versions, i.e. English and Welsh. For example, the capital of a country is Cardiff in English, a Caerdydd in Welsh.

Economy

Regions

Although Wales was reformed in 1974, the division into counties is still used and useful.

North, Central and South Wales

Wales can be divided into 3 regions:

  • North Wales is further divided into 6 counties: Anglesey, Gwynedd, [Conwy] Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham. Numerous tourist destinations along the coast, but it is primarily an agricultural area.
  • Central Wales is further divided into 2 counties: Ceredigion and Powys. A mountainous terrain sparsely populated, with a bit of a coastline on the Irish Sea.
  • South Wales is further divided into 4 counties: Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan and Gwent. Densely populated areas and many tourist destinations on the south coast of Wales.

Health

Healthcare in the UK is free and universal, but only for UK citizens. Even those coming from European Union countries may have to pay for treatment. It is better to get medical insurance before going to Wales.
