The commune of Zellwiller, typically rural, is located in the meadows of the Ried, on the edges of the plateau overlooking the Bruch.

Understand

Originally, the village was a stronghold of the Dukes of Lorraine. In the XIIe century, the name of the village appears for the first time in a charter confirming the privileges of the abbey of Baumgarten.

Zellwiller had a port on theAndlau, where the barrels of wine passed in particular to Strasbourg. The coat of arms of the village keeps the trace of the possession of the place by the Lords of Landsberg who practiced hunting there.

At the start of the 20th century, the inhabitants lived mainly on mixed farming, including tobacco growing, as well as animal husbandry. Then, the cultivation of Pinot Noir developed, giving birth to the Rouge de Zellwiller.
