learn

The Balkan Peninsula (Balkan) is a geopolitical and cultural term used to describe the land between the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea in the southeast corner of Europe. The detailed scope has many different definitions. The area has approximately 550,000 square kilometers and a population of nearly 55 million. In ancient Greece, the Balkan Peninsula was called the Haemus Peninsula. The name of the region comes from the Balkan Mountains that pass through the center of Bulgaria to Eastern Serbia.

Because the Balkan region has always had many contradictions and conflicts, including religious contradictions and territorial disputes, and the interference of foreign powers has led to frequent conflicts and wars in this region, it is also known as the European gunpowder depot. The Sarajevo incident, one of the trigger points of the First World War, also occurred on the Balkan Peninsula.
