Geographical notes

Ten km from Lodi, near the Adda, in the countryside of Bassa del Po di Lombardia between Praise is Cream.

Background

The Abbey of Cerreto gives its name to the small town that it gave rise to and of which it made history .. A few years after the year 1000 the family of the Counts of Cassino, who took refuge in this place after having abandoned Lodi, and here had constituted his own feudal power, he called the Benedictines to establish a monastery in Cerreto. The religious center was soon flourishing, and its power gradually increased together with its economic prosperity, which led to the establishment of a nearby town. The prosperity of the monks, albeit with some periods of lesser splendor, continued until the fifteenth century, when the abbey was given in commendation due to political reversals. Its assets were gradually dismembered, and thus began an inexorable decline, which continued until the suppression of the convents in 1798.

The town now has few inhabitants, and lives in a secluded and quiet dimension in the countryside between from Lodi is cremasco, with its abbey that stands out in the green, restored in the second half of the twentieth century.

  • 1 Church of San Pietro - Abbey of Cerreto, Piazza della Vittoria. It represents one of the best examples of Cistercian architecture in Lombardy. It was built over a previous church of 1084 and is placed in the moment of transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic style. With simple lines and an admirable spatial concept, it has a beautiful and imposing façade embellished by a three-bay portico, with the central part projecting and endowed with a higher arch. The division into three parts of the façade, with a gable roof, corresponds to the three central naves which have a vaulted ceiling; the dimensions of the lateral spans are the exact half of the central ones. On the northern side the robust buttresses correspond to the spans. The construction style follows the architectural criteria inspired by the order of San Bernardo: essentiality and sobriety as a measure in art and as a modus vivendi for human life. In 1542 a general reform of the structure, church and monastery was carried out. The large painting of the Cesi shovel, which represents the Madonna with Child and Saints, and the client Federico Cesi, who was the abbot of the time, was carried out during the restructuring period by Callisto Piazza; it constitutes the first significant pictorial intervention inside the abbey, which until then had been devoid of any decoration. The suppression of the monastic orders in 1798 removed the monks from Cerreto
