Geographical notes
On the river Serio, it is a city in the middle plain, equidistant from Milan, Pavia, Cremona, Bergamo; has many contacts with the neighbor Praise.
Background
There are those who attribute to the city an older origin, but tradition places it at the time of the barbarian invasions, when the inhabitants took refuge in the high ground of theisland of the Meuse to be able to face the invaders from a safer position; 15 August 570 is indicated as the day of its foundation. Possession of the counts of Camisano, it was then of Bonifacio marquis of Tuscany, father of the famous Matilde di Canossa who gave Crema to the bishop of Cremona. Far more documented is its lively history as a free municipality, a time in which the strong and never extinct antagonism between the city and Cremona.Allied with Milan versus Cremona that sided with the empire, Crema was besieged and destroyed. After the reconstruction, again fortified, it had the Cathedral, Palazzo Pretorio and autonomy which ended in 1335 with the surrender to the Visconti. A brief interlude of local lordship of the Benzoni family (1403-1423) to then flow again into the Visconti domain and finally, in 1449, into the Republic of Venice.
With the Serenissima the city experienced a particularly favorable period. Province of the Mainland, it had a good economic development as well as an important building and monumental development: a new city wall, the Palazzo Comunale (1525-1533), the Palazzo della Notaria which later became Palazzo Vescovile after the establishment of the Episcopal Curia in 1580, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce.
When the Serenissima fell in 1797, Crema became the provincial capital in a condominium with Praise; later it was administratively subjected to Cremona forever losing its administrative automation, which the city has never ceased, with more or less vigor, according to the periods, to claim. Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a notable industrial development began which led to a substantial demographic increase and to further consolidate its natural role as a reference center of the Cremasco area.
