Africa is the second largest and second most populous continent, after Asia. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean north, the Suez Canal and Red Sea northeast, the Indian Ocean southeast, and Atlantic to the west. Not including the disputed territory Western Sahara, it contains 53 countries, including Madagascar and various archipelagos associated with the continent.
