Background

Aldino is one of the ancient inhabited centers that were formed on the Reggelberg mountain range, the chain that forms the linguistic border between the Italian and German areas. The town is located on the road from Now leads to Monte San Pietro (Petersberg), at the foot of Corno Bianco and Corno Nero.Aldino was already populated in the past following the great Baiuvian migrations, but the first mention dates back only to 1175, attributable to Federico Barbarossa.

It belonged until the end of the First World War to the judicial district of Egna in Tyrol (today South Tyrol) and was part of the district of BolzanoThe local inhabitants are sometimes still referred to by the term Hessen, which means "German-speaking people from non-Bavarian areas".

The toponym is attested in the Middle Ages as on site Aldin (1177-1185)[4], in Alden (1185) and Aldein (1242 [5] and 1340) and probably derives from a Germanic personal name, Latinized in Aldius. The name of the town was Italianized in 1928 in Valdagno di Trento and in 1940 in Aldagno, but in 1955 it received its present name.

What see

  • 1 parish church. The first mentions in which reference is made to the church of Aldino date back to 1309, but during the last restoration in 1985 some excavations have shown the existence of a previous Romanesque church with two apses dating back to the twelfth century.
The church was initially dedicated to Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine I the Great. Today San Giacomo has also been added.
In the mid-15th century a new church was built. In 1485 the locality was elevated to curacy and obtained a permanent cure of souls, although it always depended on Now. In 1841 the church was enlarged with the extension of the left aisle and the construction of the right aisle, as well as the reconstruction of the bell tower. The current interior design dates back to 1897.
  • 2 Civic Museum (Dorfmuseum Aldein), 39 0471 886691. Simple icon time.svgMay / Oct. In addition to ancient peasant and artisan tools, it exhibits works of art from the Baroque and Rococo period and sacred objects. The organization of the museum dates back to 1989, when we proceeded with the cataloging and reorganization of the finds preserved in the church and in the chapel for the subsequent inauguration in 1990.
In 1998 the museum was moved to its current location, the first floor of the old elementary school, but a new arrangement is already being planned. During the opening months, from May to October, guided tours are organized.

View of the Bletterbach
A widening of the gorge
  • 3 Bletterbach (Rio di Ora or Rio delle Foglia). Simple icon time.svgApril 25 / November 2. It is a canyon located at the foot of the Corno Bianco, near the town of Aldino: it is the largest gorge in theSouth Tyrol.
This canyon is certainly very interesting from a geological point of view, as you have the opportunity to observe the structures of the deep gorges and at the same time the creation of the Dolomites. Along the way you can clearly distinguish the different layers, superimposed on each other, which contain many traces of reptiles and fossil remains (including snails). The Bletterbach geological amphitheater can only be reached on foot from Aldino or from the hamlet of Redagno (Radein).
In the 16th century, the Bletterbach was mainly linked to the mining industry. Copper miners dug burrows into the deeper layers of the sandstone, but never had much success.
Today the Bletterbach gorge does not attract miners, but mainly tourists and visitors, as well as being a meeting point for geologists who have been researching the gorge since the 1940s.
  • 4 Geological Museum of Redagno (Geoparc Bletterbach), Locality Lerch, 40, 39 0471 886946. It gives the visitor an idea of what the earth could have been like in a period ranging from 286 to 210 million years ago. At the museum footprints of saurians found in the gorge have been collected, including the Pachypes Dolomiticus, as well as examples of sandstone from Val Gardena, fossilizations of fish and cephalopods (molluscs similar to squid).
The Geoparc allows you to look inside the mountain, it gives you the opportunity to see how the canyon has carved out a route 8 kilometers long and 400 meters deep, observing the different geological eras, from the Permian to the Triassic.
Along the way, 16 plaques are displayed that illustrate the secrets of the canyon to the visitor, on some fossil finds found in the gorge, on the tunnels built by miners, on the legend of the glade of gold and of the giant Grimm.
In the lower layers, the Bolzano quartz porphyry emerges, ranging from red-gray to dark gray and was created between 280 and 260 million years ago from the ash and lava that escaped from the volcanoes of the North African continental plate. The sandstone of the Val Gardena where animal tracks and plant remains have been found. The third floor of the rocks is the Bellerophon formation, created in shallow water and lagoons. The Werfen strata follow, with numerous animal and plant fossils. The structure is crowned by the white dolomite of the Serla which forms the summit of the Corno Bianco.
The trails
From the car park at the new visitor center, near the Lahner hut, a path suitable for everyone starts and leads through a dirt road to the beginning of the gorge.
More adventurous is the path that always from the parking lot descends to the gorge at the Taubenleck, and from here, going up the entire stream in the middle of the canyon, leads to the beginning of the gorge, where there is a large waterfall at the Butterloch, which it goes up through two steep and long iron stairs. From here you go back down with the first path (the stairs have been unusable since October 2012 and it is forbidden to continue beyond the waterfall, protected by iron fences).
This route is not particularly demanding, but you must be equipped with mountain shoes, and keep in mind that you can get your feet wet. The excursion lasts 2 hours, and in the event of a thunderstorm, in winter and during thaw, a visit is not recommended.
Finally, the canyon can also be reached from Redagno, at the church of S. Volfango (Wolfgangskirche) in fact there is a path that leads directly to the Taubenleck.
