Avigliana is a municipality in the province of Turin.

To know

The municipality is located in a morainic amphitheater between Monte Pirchiriano, on which stands the Sacra di San Michele, and the hill of Rivoli, in the terminal part of the Val di Susa towards the plain in a multiple and complex territory known as the morainic Amphitheater of Rivoli-Avigliana. It is the most populated and economically important municipality in the entire Val di Susa.

The first toponym is offered by Avigliana itself, which derives its origin from the Roman Avilius with clear reference to settlers from northern Italy (mainly from the Veneto area) moved close to the Alps after the creation of the colony of Augusta Taurinorum (Turin) and with the first juridical-administrative definition of these lands on the border with the Cozian kingdom in the imperial age.

Geographical notes

The municipality is crossed by the Dora Riparia river, a tributary of the Po, and has the Great Lake and the Small Lake which are part of the Avigliana Lakes Natural Park. The city is an authentic medieval jewel set around the Alps next to the Sacra di San Michele and in front of the Mount Musinè.

Of great importance are the large canvas depicting San Michele in the act of defeating Lucifer, made by Antonio Maria Viani, and Guido Reni's San Maurizio.
