background

The first documented mention of Grönenbach comes from the year 1099. Originally, Grönenbach had its own local nobility, which however died out in the 12th century and was replaced by the Rothenstein family. The Lords of Rothenstein ruled over Grönenbach until 1482, after which the rule went to the Pappenheimer above. The reformation after Calvin found in Grönenbach in 1559 Philipp von Pappenheim († 1619) instead. As a result, one of the oldest Reformed communities in Germany exists in Grönenbach. From 1612 to 1695 the Fuggers ruled in Grönenbach. These came into the possession of the village through marriage. From 1695 until the secularization in 1803, Grönenbach was part of the Kempten prince monastery. Grönenbach has been Bavarian since 1803. The market town of Grönenbach was recognized as a Kneipp health resort in 1954, and has been a spa since 1996.
