Romanesque parish church of Sant'Ambrogio
Romanesque parish church of Sant'Ambrogio
  • 1 Romanesque parish church of Sant'Ambrogio. Founded around the sixth century, the Pieve di Bazzano had a first reconstruction in Romanesque form in 1004. Its importance reached its peak in the thirteenth century, when it had jurisdiction over seven chapels. It has a structure with three naves and has undergone several renovations which have however left the possibility of reading the traces of the oldest buildings in the construction.

A curiosity certainly represents the overturning of the axis of the church, which once had the three apses on the side of the current facade, moved here in the second half of the seventeenth century. The church houses a precious octagonal stone baptismal font (instead of a truncated cone shape inside) resting on a pedestal with primitive, Byzantine-style sculptures. The work dates back to the VII - VIII century, and represents one of the most precious Romanesque finds in the whole Permense diocese. The figures carved on the eight faces represent the theme of Baptism: St. Matthew, the lion symbol of St. Mark, the Annunciation, The Virgin, Christ. The central figure of the representation is Saint John the Baptist in an attitude of acceptance of his own destiny. The decorations with acanthus leaves and plant motifs recall the same elements of the Lombard school.

  • Oratory of Saints John and Paul.
