To know

Summer and winter tourist center has always been one of the most popular tourist places in Trentino, thanks to the hiking and fishing-hunting possibilities that the valley offers. The current toponym was officially fixed in 1927 but it is also called Castel Tesino or Casteltesino.

Geographical notes

It is set within the plateau of the same name between the Picosta and Agaro mountains. It is 24 km from Borgo Valsugana, 32 from Feltre 38 from Primiero Fair 55 from Trento.

Background

The history of Castello Tesino dates back to Roman times. The area was in fact an excellent outpost for the Roman legions who passed through the Via Claudia Augusta (a Roman road that started from Altinum towards Augusta Vindelicum (the current Augusta in Germany).

A fort was thus built on the hill of Sant'Ippolito, and around it the inhabited center from which Castello Tesino was derived. In the Middle Ages it is worth remembering the dominion of Count Biagio delle Castellare.

How to get around

What see

  • Cave of Castello di Tesino (Valnuvola cave or Bus de la Lora). The cave can be reached in about half an hour on a comfortable walk from the locality called Magri above the town, or from the neighboring town of Lamon going up the road to Valnuvola from San Donato.
It was discovered in 1926. It is of karst formation and in all likelihood was formed by the waters of the Senaiga stream which in times of flood finds an alternative route between the rocks of the mountain and over the centuries has excavated this splendid cavity which has a path of about 450 meters and winds inside the mountain with an overall flat plan. There are hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites, columns, sails, crostoni and many intermediate concretions.
The cave of Castello Tesino has as its peculiarity its hydrology. The entrance is located exactly on one of the banks of the Senaiga stream. This watercourse is part of the hydrological basin of the Brenta river and is a right tributary of the Cismon stream that flows into the Brenta right on the Valsugana valley floor. Its flow rates are very variable depending on the climatic events and, in particular, on the seasonal periods.
During the summer, the bed of the stream in the area adjacent to the cave is practically always dry. : In the spring and autumn months it starts to flow again even with very high flow rates. The cave and the stream meet to create a very special environment at the natural entrance, called the "Cave of the Shepherds". Here in the months of flooding the stream invades the large initial room and prevents access.
The underground complex is crossed by a perennial underground watercourse, the "Unknown Torrent", whose flow rate can reach one cubic meter per second, remaining considerable, although decreasing, even in periods of drought. Some of the inland basins and pools are never subject to drying up.
The underground hydrological regime depends directly on that of the Senaiga stream with which it is closely connected. A particular feature of the underground watercourse is its temporal response to external rains which seems to be almost immediate and proportionate to the quantity and intensity of rainfall. This phenomenon is also directly verifiable by tourists in the summer when, even in the case of not abundant rainfall, short and intense rains are enough to swell the internal stream to prevent the approach to the last siphon. The flow thus reaches its maximum in a few hours and then, just as quickly, returns to normal.
The "Torrente Ignoto", in addition to its concretions, is certainly one of the main attractions of the Grotta di Castello Tesino.
