Chienes (Kiens in German) is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.
To know
It is in close proximity to the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park.
Background
The testimony of a Roman milestone dating back to the era of Emperor Septimius Severus, from the third century AD, on whose stone the distance of 67 miles from the ancient Aguntum, near Lienz, today's capital of East Tyrol in Austria, certifies the strategic importance of the municipal area since ancient times, although the first official mention of the village is contained in a document from 1010, which mentions a Romanesque church in the "Kiehna" area.
Subjected in the Middle Ages to the feudal lordship of the Künigl counts, still owners of the castle of Casteldarne (German Ehrenburg), during the "peasant revolt" of 1524-25 it was a center of the Anabaptists. To the Prince Bishop of Bressanone, Kaspar Ignaz Künigl, we owe a notable economic and artistic flowering of the village during the first half of the eighteenth century.
Two architectural jewels stand out in the historical-architectural heritage of the village: the castle of Casteldarne of the twelfth century, with a makeover of the eighteenth century and the parish church of San Sigismondo of the twelfth century, a splendid example of late-Gothic Pusteria. church of Saints Peter and Paul, rebuilt in 1836, next to which stands a valuable bell tower with two orders, with mullioned windows of the fifteenth century.

- Casteldarne Castle (in German Schloss Ehrenburg) (in the homonymous hamlet). It was built and inhabited for more than 700 years by the same family, the Künigl counts. In 2010 it was sold to a local entrepreneur. The manor rises 800 m a.s.l., in a dominant position above the Rienza river and at the foot of Mount Getzen; it includes an older part from the 12th century on the southern side, and an 18th century Baroque extension on the east.
- Entering through the door on the southern side, the oldest, you reach the internal courtyard; this is a Renaissance creation commissioned by Caspar Künigl (1481-1541) to a local artist known by the name of Lucio da Trento. The courtyard is surrounded by semicircular arches supported by granite columns with quadrangular capitals. The court, which appears as the central point of the manor, underwent some changes between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
- 1 Church of Saints Peter and Paul. A church existed in Chienes as early as the 11th century, although the modern building was built between 1835 and 1838 in the neoclassical style.
