Geographical notes
Small town in the Cremonese Po Valley, on the border withCasalasca area, 13 kilometers from Cremona.
Background
The ancient Calianum would be the first nucleus of Cicognolo, which around the tenth century was already fortified. In the 12th century it was governed by the monastery of San Giovanni della Pipia and then passed into the power of Buoso da Dovara, then to the Cremonese church. Theater of armed clashes, on the border of the Cremonese territory, it was the site of clashes between 1300 and 1400-.
Over time Cicognolo became a place of important building interventions, as some families of large landowners of Cremona who owned a lot of land there wanted to build their palaces here, or to have the pre-existing ones restored and enlarged, especially in the early nineteenth century.

How to get around
What see
- Manfredi Castle. The current appearance of this imposing building is the result of the alterations and architectural additions to the original nucleus, consisting of an ancient tower (the Columbarone), which followed one another over the centuries. The primitive castle was bought by the Pesce in the second half of the 16th century. In the early nineteenth century the marquis Antonio Maria Pallavicino Clavello had it restored in neoclassical forms, the architect Luigi Voghera was commissioned by the nobleman Giuseppe Manfredi, (family to whom the property had come) to build a new residence putting his hand to the ancient castle. Between 1830 and 1839, much of the old one was demolished, the new building was built. Exposed terracotta and marble make the appearance of this imposing castle valuable and varied, scenographic in the green lawn that embellishes the ground in front of the main facade, with a romantic garden and moat behind it.
- Villa Pallavicino Montaldi, Via XXIV Maggio. Built by Luigi Voghera between 1817 and 1820, it shows a neoclassical garden with caves, temples, a hill.
- Church of San Donnino. At the end of the 19th century, Luigi Voghera's nephew, Emilio, offered to rebuild the parish church of San Donnino, which was extremely in need of restoration. The project was built starting from 1887 on a project by Carlo Visioli, another architect, who proposed the addition of the side aisles, the choir and a new facade. In 1886 the sacred building was consecrated by the bishop of Cremona Geremia Bonomelli. Three wooden statues that were in the old church recall the previous temple (from 1687): San Donnino, owner of the parish, San Rocco and the Beata Vergine del Rosario.
- Cascina Dosso Pallavicino. It was called Dosso Ciria until this family sold it to the Pallavicinos, to whom Cicognolo owes his valuable building works. The farmhouse reflects the characteristic scheme of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The oratory outside, built in 1669 and restored - as well as enlarged - in 1830, is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

Around
- Torre de 'Picenardi - Villa Sommi Picenardi developed from a pre-existing castle nucleus; starting from the sixteenth century it was transformed in the following centuries up to its present appearance. A body of the villa, in neoclassical style, overlooks the town square. A second factory develops inside and is connected to the ancient body of the primitive castle. A large garden surrounds the villa complex, surrounded by a large moat with water.
- San Lorenzo de 'Picenardi - Its Castle, built in the fifteenth century, was enlarged over time to then arrive at its present form, majestic and decidedly castellana, in the nineteenth century, the work of the architect Luigi Voghera. The vast building, in perfect condition, shows numerous crenellated towers which give it the characteristic medieval aspect, however mitigated by the elegant character of a noble castle residence. It is surrounded by a large park.
- Cremona - It has a monumental historic center - the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Town Hall - among the most distinguished in Lombardy. It was a Roman city. It was powerful at the time of the Communes and rivaled Milan, which finally subdued it. His violins (Stradivari and Amati), his Torrazzo and even more his torrone, are known everywhere.
- Sabbioneta - City of foundation, UNESCO World Heritage Site, maintains the walls within which the magic of ideal urban planning by Vespasiano Gonzaga has remained intact; the Teatro all'Antica, the Palazzo Ducale, the Gallery, the Incoronata church are some of its monuments that stand out in a context that has been admirably preserved.
