Geographical notes

Located in the Apennines ofUpper Molise, Civvitanova is 11 km from Pescolanciano, 13 from Pietrabbondante, 26 from Isernia, 33 from Agnone.

Background

The name Civitanova was attributed in the Middle Ages to distinguish it from an older settlement that stood nearby, the Civitavetula o Civitavecchia, now renamed Duronia; the first certain information dates back to 1002, when Berardo, count of Isernia, and his wife Gemma wanted to build a monastery in Civitanova del Sannio to be donated to the Benedictine rule.On February 19, 1864, it changed its name to Civitanova del Sannio, before in fact it was only Civitanova .

What see

  • Parish church of San Silvestro. It has a very ancient foundation and has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries. Access is via a staircase with a gravina stone balustrade. The interior, enlarged compared to the original building, has three naves. onserve some paintings by Giovanni Fiorante, local painter of the eighteenth century who died in Naples where he had a studio, and several wooden statues by Giovannitti di Oratino and Di Zinno di Campobasso.
  • Church of San Rocco. It is a votive church built with the offerings of the population as a popular offering in thanksgiving for the escaped plague of 1656. The statue of San Rocco is by Di Zinno.
  • Church of the Madonna del Carmelo. It was the church of the Conventual monastery, which was suppressed in the nineteenth century. It was later used for the burial of corpses. It was then rebuilt from the foundations and decorated with stuccoes on the walls and vaults thanks to the offerings of the inhabitants. The statue of the Madonna del Carmelo is the work of Amalia Dupré di Florence.
  • Bell tower and ruins of the monastery of San Benedetto. At the end of a tree-lined path that leads near the Trigno river there is a bell tower in the locality of Santa Brigida, the rest of the convent of San Benedetto. The monastery was built around the year 1000; in 1456 a violent earthquake destroyed the building, which had already been abandoned a few decades earlier.
