Geographical notes

It rises in a basin in Val Degano, in the alpine region of Carnia. It is 21 km from Tolmezzo, 15 from Paluzza, 34 from Paularo, 4 from Ovary, 24 from Sappada.

Background

It seems that the name 'Comelians' derives from Comeli, that is Comelico. In fact, probably the first inhabitants of the town must have come from that territory.

What see

  • 1 Church of San Nicolò. Dating back to the 13th century. It has a bell gable and contains frescoes from the Middle Ages and an eighteenth-century canvas attributed to Antonio Agostini.
  • 2 Parish Church of San Giorgio (Parish church of San Giorgio). It is located on a rocky spur at 640 m a.s.l. in a panoramic position on the middle Val Degano. The current building dates back to the 18th century but the origins are much older. Inside there is a Roman burial altar from the 1st century. The church also houses eighteenth-century tapestries of Germanic origin and a pipe organ by Beniasmino Zanin built in the eighteenth century. The municipal cemetery is attached to it.   • Church of San Floriano (in Povolaro). Eighteenth-century church, it has a wooden altar by Michael Parth from 1541, some paintings and a liberty altarpiece by Giuseppe Da Pozzo.
  • Church of San Vincenzo (to Iaulis). Nineteenth-century construction, built in the hamlet of Iaulis, it preserves two statues by Michael Parth from the first half of the sixteenth century. The altarpiece of Sant'Antonio by Padua is an oil on canvas.
