Geographical notes
The department of Tolima is bordered to the north by the department of Caldas, east with the departments of Cundinamarca is Huila, to the south with the department of Huila and of Cauca, to the west with the departments of Cauca, Cauca Valley, Quindío, Risaralda is Caldas.
The territory of Tolima is mainly mountainous as it is crossed from north to south by the Central Cordillera to the west while to the east it is affected by the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera. The fertile valleys of the Magdalena, Saldaña, Cabrera and others rivers stretch between the mountain ranges.
Background
The department of Tolima was born juridically in 1908 by detaching its territory from that of the department of Cundinamarca.
