background
Southern Germany's largest Fen area developed around 12,000 years ago in an often flooded lowland south of the Danube. Until the 18th century, the region could only be used as pasture by the surrounding villages. The drainage and cultivation took place a good 200 years ago under the Bavarian elector Karl Theodor, but even afterwards the Donaumoos was a problem area at risk of flooding for a long time with wind erosion of the soil and considerable bog subsidence, sometimes up to three meters, due to the dehydration.
Today the moorland is only a third of its original size of 180 square kilometers in the core area (350 square kilometers with foothills) of the region. The Donaumoos nature conservation project should preserve the last near-natural locations with typical low-moor flora and fauna and promote the traditional use of wet meadows. For example, 110,000 new plants were planted by hand around the key plant of the cattail.
The won Cultural landscape is now mostly used as arable land (potatoes and, important for gourmets: asparagus!). The Donaumoos is well developed through a dense network of cycle paths, field lanes and quiet roads, making the region an ideal flat leisure landscape for tourists for hiking and cycling with the whole family.
