background

Fan sayings

The Fanes saga cycle is about heroes, dwarves and old mountain women, also called Anguanes, about sorcery and witches and the armed conflicts surrounding the princess Dolasila.

The Fanes people were peaceful and wise, and the marmots were their allies. Princess Dolasila was the daughter of the Fanes Queen and was exchanged for a little marmot as a pledge for the alliance. The princess first lived with the marmots, where she was trained to fight. Dolasila's unfortunate love for the enemy prince Ey de Net led to war, betrayal and the downfall of the Fanes Dolomites and also of the most important people in the legend.

The Fanessage originated long before the present day "Fantasy literature" and were only passed down orally over the centuries, so they were exposed to a wide variety of cultural influences. There are no older and reliable written sources. For the first time they were put together in writing by the folklorist Karl Felix Wolff (1879-1966), who published his collection in 1957. The Fanesa sagas are now part of scientific research, also with regard to the truth of a legend; they were written in the Ladin language filmed and also set to music (musical drama).

The Fanes is mostly in South-Tirol and to a lesser extent also in Belluno in Veneto.

The Fanes group is centrally located in the Dolomites and is in the west of the Val Badia (Lad. Badia, Italian Val Badia) against the Western Dolomites delimited, in the north the Rautal (Valle di Rudo) is the border, in the northeast the Fanesberge touch the Braies Dolomites. The line applies to the south Arabba Passo Campolongo as a border.

The Fanes group is mainly culturally differentiated from the Braies Dolomites because it belongs to the Ladin-speaking cultural area. The Legend of the empire of the Fanes is an important part of the Dolomite myth and is considered that National epic of the Ladins.
