background
language
The official language is Dutch (Flemish). A lot of French is spoken, especially in the area around Brussels, and in some municipalities directly on the city limits the street signs are also bilingual. Because of the Belgian language dispute, avoid using French as much as possible. German is generally understood, even if not spoken often, otherwise you can usually switch to English.
