  • 1 Medieval castle, 39 0874 431350, @. Ecb copyright.svgGroups of people who want to visit the castle from Tuesday to Friday can apply to the Superintendency (at least 3 days before) at the addresses indicated above.. Simple icon time.svgSat 09: 00-13: 00 Sun 9: 00-13: 00/15: 00-19: 00. Located on the hill of Serrone, in the center of the historic district, it has undergone various transformations over the centuries. From castle-fortress to castle-feudal residence in medieval times, it was transformed in the century. XVI in the Renaissance castle-palace of the Di Capua feudal family. It then became a baronial-marquis property and therefore private property (today it is part of the assets belonging to the State). The original massive square-shaped medieval structure is clearly visible with the Guelph battlements on the south-west side and the corner towers towards the north-east, while the rusticated portal, the windows and the loggia with three full arches are in Renaissance style. sixth opening on the north-west facade, added in the 15th-16th century. The interior looks today, after the restorations, as a valuable picture gallery for the abundance of frescoes, painted by Donato da Copertino (Decumbertino) and disciples in 1550 on commission of Vincenzo I di Capua, Duke of Termoli and count of Gambatesa. Expression of sixteenth-century mannerism, the cycle of paintings, depicting landscapes, grotesques, curtains, pergolas, mythological and allegorical scenes, constitutes as a whole a testimony of art of considerable artistic level. Of particular interest are the allegorical figures of the cardinal virtues.
  • Parish Church of San Bartolomeo. Located in the center of the town, in the immediate vicinity of the medieval castle, it was consecrated by the archbishop of Benevento cardinal Orsini (later Pope Benedict XIII) on July 16, 1696. It has three naves, divided by 12 pillars, joined by round arches; It measures 34 meters in length, 16 in width and 10 in height. It is useless to look for a precise architectural style in the building, having undergone continuous modifications over the centuries. Overall it is a Renaissance style. The church portal is made of stone and is surmounted by a triangular tympanum supported by shelves. It reveals a possible dating to the 16th century attributable to the baptismal font of 1523. On the facade of the bell tower you can admire a triptych consisting of three panels depicting the Virgin (in the center), St. Bartholomew the Apostle and the cruciferous Lamb (on the sides). Inside the church, near the presbytery, there is the baptismal font, consisting of a large basin on a cylindrical base. The basin is decorated with two coats of arms: that of the Municipality and of the De Capua; between the two coats of arms there is the date: 1523. Also in the presbytery there is the wooden choir of local craftsmanship. The current main altar (which replaces the old one in brick and plaster eliminated because it is in a state of serious decay and devoid of any artistic value), was built with the marble of the pulpit now out of use.
  • 2 Church of San Nicola. The church of S. Nicola dates back to the 14th-15th centuries. It was built under the title of S. Sebastiano, located outside the land of Gambatesa, in a rural area and officiated from 1586 to 1653 by the Minor Conventuals of S. Francesco called della Scarpa, who lived in the adjoining convent granted to them by the university with deed of 7 November 1586. The small religious communities were suppressed by Innocenzo X, the church and the convent were abandoned. With the earthquake of 1688 the already very deteriorated conditions of the building worsened and in 1695 it was the subject of expensive restorations. After the church was renovated, the archbishop of Benevento Orsini (later Pope Benedict XIII) had the furnishings of the ancient and abandoned Church of S. Nicola al Serrone transferred there. The Church of S. Nicola is today a small jewel of Romanesque-Renaissance sacred art with a simple and neat architectural line with a gable façade. Inside, with a single nave, some valuable paintings of considerable interest, restored by the Superintendence of Fine Arts.
  • Shrine chapel of Maria Santissima della Vittoria. It is a country church with one nave, located near the town. An ancient popular tradition attributes its construction to the will of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Originally it was perhaps an Abbey with an adjoining monastery. Probably ruined by the earthquake of 1279 or other events, it was rebuilt from its foundations by Count Riccardo di Gambatesa around 1313. Despite having undergone various renovations over the centuries, the church still retains the linearity of the primitive rural architectural structure. The facade is smooth and compact; in the lunette of the portal, in bare stone, there is the coat of arms of the Crociferous Lamb. : Inside the valuable one can notice the trussed ceiling and the wooden statue of the Madonna della Vittoria from 1714. Only ruins remain of the monastery.
View of the Occhito lake
  • Occhito lake. It is a large artificial reservoir, created with a barrage on the Fortore. It marks the border between Puglia and Molise for about 10 km. It has a length of about 12 km and its containment capacity is 333 million m³ of water.
The municipalities that overlook the lake are Sant'Elia a Pianisi, Macchia Valfortore, Pietracatella, Gambatesa and Tufara in Molise; Carlantino, Celenza Valfortore and San Marco la Catola in Puglia.
The rise in humidity in the surrounding areas is attributed to its creation. The barrier can be reached from Carlantino in Puglia and from Colletorto in Molise.
