Goniądz is a historical place in the polish Voivodeship Podlaskie not far from the border to Warmia-Masuria at the Biebrza in the Biebrza Basin. The city is located in the historical region Mazovia in the Wiznaer country. The Biebrza National Park has in the suburb Osowiec-Twierdza its administrative headquarters. The Russian fortress Osowiec from the 19th century was supposed to protect the Tsarist Empire from a German invasion from East Prussia. During the First World War, the imperial army besieged the fortress from January 1915 to summer 1915 unsuccessfully, but caused great damage to the buildings. However, the tsarist troops withdrew in August 1915. The fortress was restored in the interwar period. However, it played no role in the German invasion of Poland in 1939, nor in the withdrawal of the Wehrmacht from the Red Army in 1944. Today the fortress is a museum.
