Suwałki (German: Suwalken) is a city in the polish Voivodeship Podlaskie in northeastern Poland on the Czarna Hańcza on the Suwałki Lake District, not far from the two border triangles of Poland with Russia (Kaliningrad) and Lithuania as well as with Lithuania and Belarus.

In the High Middle Ages the northern part of the country came to the Teutonic Order while the southern part was conquered by the Poles-Lithuanians. The city itself was founded by the Camaldolese of the WigryMonastery founded. The place was mentioned for the first time in 1688, received market rights in 1710 and town charter in 1715, which was confirmed by the Polish king in 1720. Until 1795 the city of Suwałki belonged to Poland-Lithuania. During the Third Partition of Poland, Suwałki became part of Prussia, was united with the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807 and, together with Congress Poland, came to the Russian Empire in 1815. From 1919 Suwałki belonged to the Second Polish Republic. Suwałki was occupied by the Wehrmacht during the German invasion of Poland in autumn 1939 and from then on belonged to East Prussia as the capital of the Sudauen district. Suwałki was born in December 1939 Suwalken renamed and was called from 1941 Sudauen. In 1944 the city was captured by the Red Army. Since then, the city has been called Suwałki again and belongs to Poland again. The border between Poland and Lithuania runs near the municipality. Located near the Lithuanian border, Suwałki is now the second largest city in the voivodeship with almost 70,000 inhabitants Podlaskie. It serves as a starting point for excursions to the surrounding national parks (see below). National parks). The only real main and thoroughfare is the one running in a north-south direction Ul. By plane
The closest international airports on the Polish side are the Warsaw Airport and Modlin Airport at Warsaw (WAW) and the Olsztyn Airport at Olsztyn/Szczytno. Warsaw is approx. 300 km from Suwałki, it takes a good 4 hours by car and more than 5 hours by train.
Flights to Vilnius (approx. 200 km northeast) are hardly attractive in terms of price from Central Europe. The one 135 km away Kaunas Airport (KUN) is only available from Ryanair served from various airports in Scandinavia and the British Isles.

Die-hard rail enthusiasts can travel from Germany with the Polish weekend ticket Bilet Turystyczny for 45 Zl. in the 31-hour schedule from Berlin-Lichtenberg Kostrzyn and overnight stay in Ełk get to Suwałki cheaply.
After completion, Suwałki will be installed on the new line of the Rail Baltica lie. The bus station, open 4.00-20.00, counters shorter, is on the side of the train station near the city. Note: The stop for international buses and the express line to Warsaw is not in the bus station but at the bus shelter on the main street where the local buses also stop during the day.

Suwałki is on the E 67 Helsinki–Prague. From the south you come from Białystok and Augustów. The trunk road goes north towards Kaunas.

- On the mostly under nature protection Rospuda can be paddled for around 100 km.
- The monastery and the local history museum in the Bishop's Palace (ul. J. Piłsudskiego 28) are well worth a visit. A school is used as inexpensive accommodation during the summer holidays.
National parks
- The Wigry National Park is located around the lake of the same name, which at 73 m is one of the deepest in Poland. The area is home to around 190 species of birds and 25 species of fish live in the waters. On a headland there is a baroque monastery of the Kamadulese, which today is called with its twelve hermitages is being used. The designated hiking trail around the lakes is 49 km long (marked in green). One runs in the park in summer Narrow gauge railway (29 zl.).
