Guastallese is a territory of Emilian bank of the Po.

Guastalla it was its capital for a long time when it was a Duchy and it still constitutes its main center for services, economy, urban character.

Geographical notes

The part of the lower Emilian Po plain that surrounds Guastalla and its area is squeezed between Parma lowland, Reggiano, Oltrepò Mantua Lombard and the course of the river Po that separates it to the north fromOglio Po also Lombard. Enza on the western border and Crostolo in the central area, not far from Guastalla, are the other two rivers in the area.

Background

It was for two centuries the Duchy of a branch of the Gonzaga, and after its extinction it became part of the Duchy of Parma of the Bourbons, which assumed the name of Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. The territory, physically detached from the rest of the state, enclave in the duchy of Modena, suffered a certain marginality. The Unit put an end to the self-government of the territory which was assigned to the administrative area of Reggio Emilia.

Urban centers

  • Boretto - It has a tourist port on the Po, where there are also numerous facilities for boats as well as clubs and restaurants with typical cuisine (catfish, river fish, frogs).
  • Brescello - Along the bank of the Po, is the ancient Brixellum, an important Roman center along the land trade routes and a port of great importance for river traffic. Its contemporary notoriety is linked not so much to its courtly past, as to having been the film set of the successful series of Don Camillo; in the village there are memories of Guareschi's characters in the names of commercial activities, in monuments, even in a museum.
  • Gualtieri - The Bentivoglio were its feudal lords from 1567 to 1634, a period that was not very long but was enough to leave an indelible mark on the town's urban layout: the large, scenic Bentivoglio square, one of the most beautiful squares in the Bassa.
  • Guastalla - Its highly respected urban plan brings back to the role of ducal capital of the city, with beautiful architecture and Gonzaga atmospheres.
  • Luzzara - On the border withOltrepò Mantua it is a city of Gonzaga atmospheres, with arcaded streets. There is the National Museum of Naive Art Cesare Zavattini which permanently hosts works by Italian naives.

  • Regional river tourist port of Boretto[1] - The port of Boretto has a large equipped floodplain area close to the main embankment which constitutes the Strada Statale 62 della Cisa which passes close to the built-up area. In the area of Lido Po numerous tourist and folkloristic events take place; mini cruises on the river are also carried out. There are numerous services for boats: piers for mooring pleasure boats; pontoons for mooring motor vessels up to 1,000 tons. of gross tonnage (5th European class); crane for hauling boats with a capacity of 3 tons; boat rental; drinking water; electric energy; fuel distribution; mechanical assistance; boat for assistance; large parking area; free camping; public phone; Tourist Information Office; park with an adjoining dance floor and summer bar; restaurant with play area and playground; Federal Center of the Italian Motorboat Federation; Nautical School for issuing licenses; Toilet; ecological base station equipped for the collection and disposal of urban and special waste.

What see

Gualtieri -Piazza Bentivoglio - Clock tower
  • Bentivoglio square (to Gualtieri). Large, harmonious, arcaded on three sides, it appears unexpectedly in this agricultural center at the foot of the high banks of the Po. Of dimensions that one would expect to find in much larger cities, it houses the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria della Neve, in the forms of its eighteenth-century makeover, and the Bentivoglio Palace, of sixteenth-century origins and eighteenth-century renovations. Inside the eighteenth-century theater of G.B.Fattori and the Antonio Ligabue Documentary Museum, the very famous naive painter from Gualtier. The square is accessed through the through portico of the Clock Tower.
