Brescello is a city ofEmilia Romagna.
To know
The ancient Brixellum Roman, a city of trade and military garrison, was the subject of numerous citations by Latin writers and was certainly of greater historical fame than today's center, which instead is linked to the notoriety derived from the series of films that have as protagonists the Guareschian characters of Don Camillo and Peppone, filmed in this location.
Geographical notes
At the foot of the banks of the Po, on the right bank of the Guastallese, has intense contacts with the Lombard centers ofOglio Po on the opposite bank, in particular Viadana from which it is 5 km. It separates it 13 km from Guastalla, 18 from Casalmaggiore, 43 from Reggio Emilia.
Background
The ancient Celtic center was subdued by the Romans around 220 BC. becoming a colony of Rome which in the 1st century AD. it enjoyed considerable prosperity thanks to its commercial activity, its port at the mouth of the Enza and its central location in the Po Valley. The struggles for supremacy between Galba, Otone and Vitellio saw Brixellum play an important role in the story, as it was the stronghold of Otho, who committed suicide there. With the decline of the Empire Brixellum in turn declined. Episcopal seat in 389, with Genesio first bishop (and today patron saint), it was destroyed at the end of the sixth century by the Lombards during the struggles with the Byzantines.
Matilde di Canossa brought new life to the coastal center by settling the Benedictine monks, to whom Brescello ceded, making them independent from the bishopric. In the period of the Communes it was subject to Parma, later disputed by the lordships of the Rossi, Correggeschi, Visconti, Sforza, Estensi, Republic of Venice, duchy of Ferrara and Duchy of Modena in which it finally merged. With the Este of Modena it was fortified and reorganized, but in the eighteenth century Spanish troops demolished every fortification. In the following century it passed into the orbit of Reggio, to then enter united Italy after having briefly been the temporary seat of the Este duchy.

What see
- 1 Church of Santa Maria Nascente, piazza Matteotti. It is the church of Don Camillo's speaking Christ, surrounded by a canopy with twisted wooden columns, the work of the Veronese Bruno Avesani. The current structure is that of the reconstruction of 1829-1837, as the ancient medieval church had become insufficient and had become unsafe. Keep good paintings. With three naves, it has six side altars; the ancient presbytery has become the left presbytery. The bell tower was built in 1896. The porch of the facade is a legacy of the film shootings of the Don Camillo series; provisionally built as a set for the film, it was then actually built.
- 2 Ercole del Sansovino, piazza Matteotti. The statue is located in the center of the square and represents Hercules Benefactor; Jacopo Tatti known as Sansovino built it in 1553 and had its current location in 1727; the statue now visible is however only a copy. The square is surrounded on two sides by two rows of arcades; a third side houses the parish church.
- 3 Monastery of San Benedetto. With the absence of the cloistered Benedictine nuns following the suppression of the religious order, the fifteenth-century complex now houses cultural institutions as well as the municipal council hall, civic rooms and municipal police.
- 4 Peppone and Don Camillo Museum. It is housed in the building of the former monastery of San Benedetto, and represents just one of the many initiatives that Brescello has put in place to take advantage of the publicity derived to the town from having been a film set for the Don Camillo series. The name of the parish priest of the Bassa and of the mayor Peppone recur almost everywhere; you can even meet them in the square, where the statues of the two characters face each other on both sides where they were placed in 2001 to commemorate the fifty years of the first film. Next to the building of the monastery of San Benedetto is the Giovannino Guareschi Park, the famous creator of the equally famous characters.
- 5 Archaeological Museum, Via Cavallotti, 37 (at the San Benedetto Cultural Center), ☎ 39 0522 482564, @[email protected]. Sat-Sun and holidays: 9: 30-12: 30; 15: 00-18: 00.
